The Rotary Club of Shepherdstown honored Dr. Mary J.C. Hendrix with a Paul Harris Fellow recognition during the Shepherd University Board of Governors meeting on June 11, recognizing her distinguished leadership, service, and lasting contributions to the University and the broader community.
Named for Rotary founder Paul Harris, the Paul Harris Fellow is among Rotary’s most respected recognitions. Established by Rotary International in 1957, it is associated with support for The Rotary Foundation, which funds humanitarian, educational, and peace-building initiatives around the world, including Rotary’s historic effort to eradicate polio.
What makes the recognition particularly meaningful in Shepherdstown is the tradition established by the Rotary Club of Shepherdstown nearly forty years ago. Since the club’s charter in 1987, Paul Harris Fellow recognitions have been reserved for individuals whose service, leadership, and commitment to others exemplify Rotary’s ideal of Service Above Self. A contribution of $1,000 was made to The Rotary Foundation in each Dr. Hendrix’s name.
During her tenure as Shepherd University’s 16th president and first alumna president, Dr. Hendrix strengthened the University’s academic excellence, expanded opportunities for students, and deepened Shepherd’s engagement with the region and the world. Her leadership in higher education, combined with a distinguished career in biomedical research and public service, has positively impacted countless lives.
