The Paul Harris Award and The Rotary Club of Shepherdstown

Shortly after this club’s charter in 1987, The PolioPlus Campaign was in full swing. The club took part in this historic effort and raised $32,000 or $1,000 per member toward this fledgling and ambitious global initiative of epic proportions. We took our charter and the Polio Plus Campaign goals seriously and broke all district records with our commitment.

We learned that we could have used that contribution to the Foundation to award each member of the Club with a Paul Harris Fellowship. But the board chose a different path and made a lasting interpretation of the Paul Harris Award process. Over the last 32 years, we have continued to channel contributions to the Rotary Foundation through the club and use those credits annually to recognize individuals, from the club and the community, for exceptional service. Recipients are determined by nominations from club members, and then ballot election at a special meeting of past Fellowship recipients, who are active members of the Club.
