A Small Project, Big Smiles at Canterbury Center.

Some projects don’t just get planned—they grow out of connection, and from listening.

When the Rotary Club of Shepherdstown welcomed Canterbury Center Executive Director Stefanie Nelson and Recreation Assistant Doug Pifer, they shared how even small touches—like a bird feeder outside a window—can brighten a resident’s entire day.

That idea didn’t sit on the shelf for long.

With craftsmanship from Walt Eifert and coordination by Diane Johnston, our Community Service Committee got to work—committing to install ten custom-built, squirrel- and deer-resistant bird feeders, keep them filled with seed, and create an ongoing schedule to care for them.

Last Saturday morning, more than a dozen Rotarians showed up ready to make it happen. In just over an hour, all ten feeders were installed throughout the courtyards, right outside residents’ windows.

As Walt put it, this was a true “feel-good” project—but it’s also the kind of hands-on effort that turns a simple idea into something lasting.

Now, each feeder offers more than birdseed—it brings movement, color, and a daily moment of connection just outside every window.
