Rotary Club of Shepherdstown volunteers recently pulled on their safety vests and helped clean up two miles of Route 45, from the Berkeley County line to the Shepherdstown Fire Department, as part of the club’s Adopt-a-Highway program. This stretch of road is sponsored by Insurance Outfitters.
A Partnership That Gives Twice
Insurance Outfitters (Erie Insurance) is owned by our fellow Rotarians Tom and Michele Maiden. In return for the club’s volunteer support of this twice-yearly cleanup, Insurance Outfitters donates $1,000 to The Rotary Foundation. That means one morning of work keeps our roadside clean and supports Rotary’s service around the world.
Many Hands on the Road
Brian Palank and the club’s Environmental Service Committee organized the Rotary volunteers, who were joined by several students from Shepherd University’s MEDLIFE chapter. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Reserve patrolled the road throughout the cleanup to control traffic and make drivers aware of the crews working along the shoulder.
By the end of the morning, the crews had filled 20 bags of trash, which were staged along the road for pickup by the highway department.
Join Us on November 7
Route 45 isn’t our only stretch. The club also cares for two miles of Route 230, from the “Y” to Alma Bea’s, which is the longest-running Adopt-a-Highway commitment in West Virginia. The club will gather again on Saturday, November 7 at the Hoxton Agency for our next Adopt-a-Highway cleanup. Many hands make light work, so come lend yours! Get the details here.
Thank You
Our thanks go to Tom and Michele Maiden and Insurance Outfitters for their generous sponsorship, to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Reserve for keeping everyone safe, to the MEDLIFE students for lending a hand, and to everyone who volunteered.
