The Rotary Club of Shepherdstown gathered last week to present its highest club honor, the Paul Harris Fellow recognition, to two members whose service exemplifies Rotary’s guiding principle of “Service Above Self.”
The ceremony opened with remarks from the Paul Harris Committee chair, Fred Dalauro, who reflected on what distinguishes a Paul Harris Fellow: a sustained record of service, generous support for Rotary’s humanitarian and educational programs, a willingness to volunteer whenever help is needed, and a consistent commitment to improving the lives of others.
Recipients are selected through a thoughtful process. Shepherdstown Rotarians submit written nominations, which are reviewed in person by the club’s current Paul Harris Fellows. A ranked-choice vote is then used to ensure the final decision represents the majority. This year’s selection was especially difficult, with many outstanding nominees and an exceptionally close final vote.
Bill Howard then shared the history and significance of the Paul Harris Fellow recognition through an interactive quiz that brought some fun—and a little friendly competition—to the celebration. The presentation explored Rotary’s beginnings, the legacy of founder Paul Harris, and the continuing impact of The Rotary Foundation’s work around the world.
Our first honoree, Cara Keys, was recognized for the warmth, energy, and determined leadership she has brought to Rotary since joining the club six years ago. A passionate advocate for youth programs, Cara transformed an ambitious fundraising idea into a major success by securing sponsors, selling tickets, and mobilizing a team of volunteers—all with her characteristic humility and infectious smile. As vice president, she welcomed guest speakers with grace and made the club’s Discover Rotary program both personal and inviting, inspiring others to become part of Rotary. Beyond the club, Cara runs her own business, mentors employees, encourages the dreams of her four children, and serves on the Jefferson County Commission. She was also named a Woman of Distinction by the Girl Scouts of the Nation’s Capital. Raised in a Rotary family, Cara continues that legacy by living the values of Service Above Self.
Dr. Brian Palank was honored for a lifetime of compassionate care and community service. During his remarkable 44 years as a much-loved local dentist—without missing a single day of work—he became known for treating generations of local families with kindness, going above and beyond for patients in need, and volunteering his time at several free clinics. Beyond his dental practice, Brian has served as a youth soccer referee for 40 years, contributed his leadership to bank boards, taking over the Rotary Club’s Adopt-a-Highway program, and generously supported many local causes including the new Shepherdstown welcome sign and the Shepherdstown Day Care Center.
The club also recognized Dr. Mary J.C. Hendrix with Paul Harris Fellow honors at an earlier ceremony. Outgoing Rotary Club President Dale Homan presented the recognition during Hendrix’s final Shepherd University Board of Governors meeting. A Shepherd alumna and the first graduate to serve as the university’s president, Hendrix has combined distinguished leadership in higher education with an internationally respected career in cancer research. The honor celebrated her enduring commitment to education, scientific discovery, community leadership, and service to others.
