Final Round of Rotary 1st Grade Readings Underway

Volunteers from the Shepherdstown Rotary Club today (May 6) read to three 1st grade classes at TA Lowery Elementary School in Kearneysville. The accompanying photo shows one of the readers, Maria Brown, with her class. The other readers were Joy Lewis and Carol Wootton.

The readings were part of an in-school reading program initiated last year by the Shepherdstown and Charles Town Rotary clubs. Members of the two clubs visit four Jefferson County schools four times a year to read books to 1st grade classes. They give every child in each class a copy of the book that was read, and the children get to keep these books as their own and take them home with them. The books that are read are selected by teachers at the schools. The Rotary clubs pay for all the books.

Today’s readings marked the beginning of the final round of readings for this school year. Members of the Charles Town Club will read to students at Ranson Elementary and Blue Ridge Elementary next Monday, May 13, and members of the Shepherdstown Club will read at North Jefferson Elementary on Wednesday, May 15.

The book read this time was “The Field Day from the Black Lagoon,” by Mike Thaler. It’s a witty, irreverent account of the efforts of one little boy, Hubie, to prepare himself for a planned school field day.
