Club Members Read to First Graders

Volunteers from the Shepherdstown Rotary Club read to the children in three 1st grade classes today at TA Lowery elementary school.

The accompanying photo shows one of the volunteers, Rick Caruso, with his class. We thank him and the other readers, Charlie Smith, Carol Wootton, and Fritzie Martin, for pitching in to help with these readings.

Volunteers from the Charles Town Rotary Club also read today to 1st grade classes at Blue Ridge Elementary School.

Two more rounds of readings will take place later this week. Shepherdstown Rotarians will be reading at North Jefferson elementary school on Wednesday and Charles Town Rotarians will be reading at Ranson elementary school on Friday.

This in-school reading program was initiated by the two Rotary clubs in 2023. Members of the two clubs visit the abovementioned Jefferson County schools several times a year to read books to 1st grade classes and give every child in each class a copy of the book that was read. The children get to keep these books as their own and take them home with them. The books that are read and distributed are selected by teachers at the schools. The Rotary clubs pay for all the books.

The book being read at the four schools this week is “The Caring Me I Want to Be,” by Mary DiPalermo. It tells the story of a little girl who tries to practice kindness every day.
