Rotarians from the Shepherdstown and Charles Town Rotary Clubs brought the joy of reading to first grade students at four Jefferson County elementary schools in mid-December.

Participating Rotary readers included Liz Wilson, Carol Wooten, Judy Wilson, and Fritzie Martin, who visited classrooms to read aloud and engage students in the shared experience of storytelling.

This literacy initiative was launched jointly by the Shepherdstown and Charles Town Rotary Clubs in 2023. Members of both clubs visit participating Jefferson County elementary schools four times each year to read to first grade classes. Each child receives a copy of the book that is read aloud, which they are encouraged to take home and keep. Book selections are made by the schools’ teachers, and all books are purchased and provided by the Rotary Clubs.

During this visit, Rotarians read The Biggest Christmas Tree Ever by Steven Kroll. The story highlights teamwork and community as two small mice and a village work together to bring home a beautiful Christmas tree, a fitting message for the holiday season.
