Rotary Explores Shepherdstown’s History and Haunts

The Shepherdstown Rotary Club gathered on Wednesday, October 15, for a special evening meeting that took members beyond the meeting bell—into the shadowy streets and spirited history of Shepherdstown.

Led by award-winning guide Janet Hughes, the club enjoyed one of her renowned Shepherdstown Ghost Tours, a 90-minute stroll through the town’s most storied sites. Along the way, Rotarians explored the fascinating history of three historic graveyards, heard tales of long-forgotten residents, and even uncovered the enduring legend of the elephant buried beneath Trinity Episcopal Church.

Adding a touch of local charm, the group was greeted by the town’s famous graveyard cat, Cecil, who made a cameo appearance among the tombstones.

The evening blended education, fellowship, and a dash of the supernatural, reminding us that community connections can be found in even the most unexpected places. Everyone agreed—it was a memorable night with Rotary friends and a spirited celebration of Shepherdstown’s rich past.
