The Rotary Club of Shepherdstown has inducted Judy Wilson as a new member. The induction ceremony was held at the Club’s August 13 morning meeting at the Bavarian Inn.

The accompanying photo from the ceremony shows, from left to right, Club vice president Dale Homan; Club president Cara Keys; Wilson; and Pam Wagoner, Rotary District 7360 Governor.

Now retired, Wilson had a 42-year career in education. After twenty years in the classroom, she transitioned into various roles, including reading intervention, gifted and talented programs, classroom enrichment, and testing coordination. She was an adjunct instructor at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, in St. Mary’s, MD, and the College of Notre Dame of Maryland (now Notre Dame of Maryland University), in Baltimore. From 2001 to 2010, she served as an instructional specialist in the central office of the Montgomery County Maryland Public Schools. Her final eight years with the Montgomery County school system were spent as the full-time staff developer at Farmland Elementary School in North Bethesda.

A Shepherdstown native, Wilson grew up as the oldest granddaughter of Dutch immigrants in a local third-generation family flower business. She waited on customers and learned to arrange flowers at Van Tol Florist in Charles Town, and as a high school and college student she worked many summers and long holiday hours there.

Her mother, Barbara Van Tol, and her sister, Nancy, of Van Tol Village Florist, were among the first women members of the Shepherdstown Rotary Club.

As a retiree, she still presents at local and state educational conferences. She also serves on Shepherd University’s Board of Governors and is a member of the university’s Scarborough Society. She lives in Shepherdstown. Her husband, Dr. Jeffrey M. Wilson, passed away last May.
