The Rotary Clubs of Shepherdstown and Martinsburg held their 37th annual World Affairs Seminar for area high school students on October 24. Eighty students from eight high schools in the eastern panhandle attended the half-day event, which was held on the Shepherd University campus in Shepherdstown.
The seminars are aimed at inspiring critical thinking and informed dialogue among high school students on topics of pressing global and local significance. The topic of this year’s seminar was “Water Security: Local, National and Global Perspectives.”
Participating students heard presentations by four speakers and then broke into discussion groups. The speakers were Gabriel Sidman, climate change specialist for the World Bank Group; Dr. John Matthews, executive director of the Alliance for Global Water Adaptation; Dr. Nathaniel Hitt, senior scientist with the West Virginia Rivers Coalition; and Maria Russo, coordinator of the West Virginia Rivers Coalition’s Clean Water Campaign.
