SUMMARY:Fun with Music Trivia from the 60's and 70's
DESCRIPTION:Anyone who set foot in Brian Palank’s office knows that “musak” played constantly\, partly to drown out the whine of the dental drill but also the always loquacious doctor\, nurses\, and gauze-garbled patients. You always left with a new ear worm—a song you hadn’t heard since high school. Through it all\, the good doctor absorbed a textbook knowledge of the piped-in hits of the ’60s and ’70s\, among other genres. So this morning we will enjoy an interesting “spin” on 44 years of dental practice. \nBrian’s brief bio in his own words: \n“I was raised in the suburbs of Washington DC.\, first in PG County and then in the Rockville-Potomac areas of Montgomery County. I attended high school in DC at St John’s College high school\, followed by college in Worcester\, Mass\, where I majored in biology and was the team mascot (Crusader ) for the football team. Following graduation in 1975\, I started dental school in Baltimore at the University of Maryland. There\, I met my wife\, Chris\, who was a nursing student at the time. We moved to Martinsburg in 1979 for me to participate in a 1-year postgraduate training program learning advanced procedures. Following my year at the VA\, I opened my dental practice in 1980 in Shepherdstown. I retired this past spring after 44 years. Chris and I have been married 46 years and have two children and two grandsons.”

SUMMARY:Alma Cedillo: My Exchange Year\, Belgium 2023-2024
DESCRIPTION:My talk is titled “My Exchange Year\, Belgium 2023-2024”. After my senior year\, I was given the opportunity to participate in this program to further promote Rotary core values abroad and also learn to use them in my personal/future professional life. ln this talk\, I plan to relate the personal experiences I had as a Rotary Youth exchange student during this past year. These personal experiences include how I adapted to a new language\, living with “strangers”\, being in a new culture\, and more along these topics. I will be sharing the challenges that I faced along with all the positive experiences as well. The goal of my presentation is to give fellow Rotarians an inside view of what it is like to do an exchange in recent time and also show what the exchange program itself has to offer a young person.

SUMMARY:SPEAK Series Event for Rotary
DESCRIPTION:The Speak Series Board (including Adam Booth) will give our club a short presentation about their organization and guest speaker Dolores Hydock (see bio below) will give us a “sneak preview” short story in advance of her official presentation the following day at the Community Center. Event will be held in the Bavarian Inn pub room and appetizers and cash bar will be provided. Cocktail hour goes from 6:00-6:45 PM\, and then guests are requested to be seated no later than 6:45 PM for Dolores’ presentation. Sign up registration will be on our website shortly (RSVP deadline will be June 3rd) and the event will be free to Rotarians due to anonymous donors who will pay for the Bavarian Inn food (but guests will have to pay for cocktails/drinks). \nMore information on Dolores Hydock: Storyteller and actress Dolores Hydock fills the stage with what one reviewer called “a swirl of characters and a cascade of lovely language.” Her wit and energy bring sparkle to her funny\, affectionate personal stories\, oral histories\, literary classics\, and medieval tales that make the magic and mystery of ancient wisdom come alive for 21st century story lovers. She is the 2023 recipient of the ORACLE Circle of Excellence Award from the National Storytelling Network. \nSpeak Series
