SUMMARY:Paul Harris Candidate Nominations Due
DESCRIPTION:I am pleased to announce the initiation of this year’s Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) candidate nomination and selection program. The program was created by our club to recognize and award our highest club honor to club and community members who exemplify “Service Above Self” in all that they say and do. While we as Rotarians all follow this mantra\, there are those among us who consistently exceed expectations and deserve special recognition by our club. The identification and nomination of these unique individuals is up to you. \nThe nomination forms for club member(s) and community member(s) can be downloaded below. Also attached are a list of all club members showing their current PHF status\, and a list of community members that have been awarded a PHF in the past. \nAny member of our club can nominate a club and/or community member for this award. However\, a current PHF must sponsor the nomination. All nominations must be in writing (typed or handwritten) on the appropriate attached form\, and submitted to me by April 16\, 2025. The completed nomination forms will be circulated to all club PHFs for final selection via majority vote at a special breakfast held for this purpose. The tentative date for this breakfast will be on or about May 6\, 2025. While the final number of awards has not been established to date\, it will be determined by the club board of directors at some point in the near future and announced at the PHF breakfast. \nPlease do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about this very important club function. \nSincerely\, \nWalt Eifert \nDocument Resources: \n2025 PHF Club Member Nomination Form \n2025 PHF Community Member Nomination Form \nList of 2025 Club PHFs2025 \nCommunity PHF Awards History dft 3 25 \n

SUMMARY:Challenges in International Conservation with Daan Vreugdenhill
DESCRIPTION:Daan Vreugdenhil has been involved in service clubs for nearly 45 years\, starting with the Round Table in the Netherlands around 1980 before joining Shepherdstown Rotary 25 years ago. An avid outdoorsman\, he enjoys skiing\, hiking\, speedskating\, kayaking\, scuba diving\, cycling\, photography\, and classic cars. \nA leading conservation ecologist\, Daan holds a doctorate from Wageningen University\, one of the world’s top green universities. Since 1969\, he has worked globally in conservation\, speaking seven languages and traveling to 90 countries. He has led National Geographic-style expeditions in uncharted jungles of South America and Africa\, including the first to Ecuador’s Yasuni area. \nHis half-century career includes work with the UN’s FAO\, Rijkswaterstaat\, IDB\, GIZ\, USAID\, and other international institutions. In 1989\, he founded the World Institute for Conservation and Environment (WICE). He played a key role in selecting Ecuador’s first protected areas\, including Yasuni National Park and Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve\, and pioneered ecotourism in Ecuador with the Cuyabeno Lodge. \nDaan believes national parks must generate economic interest to ensure political support and prevent destruction. Now\, he is developing “national parks tours” to promote conservation through responsible tourism. Meanwhile\, international climate and conservation conferences continue to struggle with financing solutions\, as ambitious environmentalists clash with slow-moving political systems.

SUMMARY:Four-Way test Speech Contest
DESCRIPTION:Jen Wabnitz and the Club Service Committee have been working hard for our club to host a Four Way Test Speech Contest.  What is a Four Way Test Speech Contest?  It engages local school students in embracing the high ethical standards our Four Way Test embodies by applying its principles to a current ethical issue. Students are challenged to identify a topic they feel passionate about and to adopt a point of view from which they will seek to persuade others. It should be something from the student’s personal experience or general knowledge. There are no restrictions regarding the choice of topic as long as it is not blatantly offensive. \nEach part of the Four Way Test should be addressed during the speech. They should be specifically stated\, as the intent of the speech is to use the Four Way Test to resolve an issue. Each part could be used to prove either a positive or negative point.  We will have five club members serving as judges.  Two winners will be announced tomorrow morning at the conclusion of the contest\, and they will have the opportunity to advance to a district-level contest. \nThe good news – we have 11 students from Jefferson High School as participants!  We will have a club member time each speech; there is a time limit of 7 minutes or less.  The not quite as good news – we will have to start the contest very soon after 7:30 a.m. and our meeting may not conclude until the 9 a.m. range.  We will move it along as quickly as we can but we also want to be fair to each participant.  If you need to depart the meeting before we are finished\, please try to do so in between participant speeches.  Each student spends much effort preparing and rehearsing their speeches\, so thank you in advance for being patient with the time needed.

SUMMARY:Kakamega\, Kenya & 29:11 with Terry Walker
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn more about 29:11\, Inc. and their mission to help one street-child at a time through their HOPE program.  Terry Walker and Jennifer Satterlee will share their experience from the November 2024 trip to Kakamega\, Kenya and the amazing impact this non-profit organization has on these often forgotten children. \nWe dream of a world where no child has to sleep on the street hungry and alone. A world where no child has to sniff glue to make their hunger pains go away. A world where no child is invisible to their community or separated from their family. \nThe Board of Directors is made up of some of the most passionate people you will ever meet. What started out as one adventure turned into a lifetime of commitment to a bigger calling. “We want to help street-connected children change their story and change it in the way they want to change it. We want to show them the dignity and respect they deserve in controlling their future as human beings.”

SUMMARY:Hospice and Palliative Care 101: What to Expect and When to Refer
DESCRIPTION:A relative newcomer to supportive care\, Jim Klein joined Hospice of the Panhandle in January 2024. He efforts have made an immediate impact in developing community partnerships and the expansion of service. His zeal and effectiveness manifested recognition by the NHPCO (National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization) where he was invited to speak at the national conference in Denver\, Colorado in September and hopes to share similar information in his Rotary presentation. The focus of the information Jim will share includes a wide variety of supportive care as well as a brief overview of recent community partnerships (Panhandle Palliative Services\, our free grief services\, in-patient facility and volunteering with Hospice of the Panhandle). Jim enjoys community engagement and welcomes new opportunity to share information. Jim can be reached at JKlein@HospiceOTP.org or call 304-264-0406.

SUMMARY:Classification talk with Jamie Miller
DESCRIPTION:Originally from Martinsburg\, my husband and I moved to Shepherdstown in 2017. We fell in love with a piece of property while we were out and about in Shepherdstown and decided this was where we wanted to grow our family. I have worked in recruitment for eight years; first in university admissions recruitment and now for WVU Medicine Human Resources. I recruit for several nursing services departments and other healthcare professional positions at Berkeley and Jefferson Medical Centers. I am a remote employee and love opportunities where I’m able to engage with the community. I was involved in fundraising several years ago and also had the opportunity to partner with Rotary to establish the Blue Ridge CTC Rotaract Club in 2015 when I was a faculty member. I’m grateful for the opportunity to get involved with Shepherdstown Rotary!

SUMMARY:Dabney Chapman: Man\, Myth\, and Dad & Other Civil War Relics
DESCRIPTION:John Chapman\, son of long-time Shepherdstown Rotary member R. Dabney Chapman (1929-2015)\, was born in Garmisch-Partinkirchen\, West Germany\, in 1965\, and grew up a “State Department brat\,” moving from country to country thanks to his father’s career. Migrating to Shepherdstown in 1983 to attend Shepherd College\, he became enamored of the area’s beauty\, history\, and people\, and like so many others has remained in the region ever since\, ultimately convincing his parents to retire here in 1986. \nA longtime teacher of middle school Social Studies\, he inherited his father’s love for history\, particularly as it pertains to the Shenandoah Valley and the Civil War. As a result\, his primary avocation and passion for the last 35 years has been searching the farms and fields of the lower Shenandoah Valley\, particularly around Shepherdstown\, with his shovel and metal detector- occasionally succeeding in discovering and documenting long-forgotten homesites or Civil War camps. Articles and pictures of the results have been published in North South Trader’s Civil War and American Digger magazines. \nJohn and his wife Crystal\, a case manager nurse at Berkeley Medical Center\, reside just outside metropolitan Cherry Run in Morgan County\, along with their dog\, cat\, and three-legged rescue squirrel Miss Twiggy.
