SUMMARY:Best Line Wins: A Play Inspired by the Improvised Lives of Elaine May & Mike Nichols
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon at the Contemporary American Theater Festival and “Best Line Wins.” \n“Modesty hasn’t done much for women\, historically speaking.”  \nNichols & May were one of the greatest comedy duos of all time\, but when they parted ways\, Mike Nichols soared while Elaine May struggled. The system wasn’t built for “difficult” women\, but it endlessly rewarded “charming” men. Decades later\, when Mike approaches Elaine with a new opportunity\, she must wrestle with what matters more: succeeding on her own\, or reuniting with the partner who knows her true worth. Set in the complex interaction of creativity\, competition\, and gender disparity\, this split-second-timed\, laugh-out-loud play by USA Today bestselling author and 2024-2025 Dramatists Guild Foundation National Fellow Beth Kander examines the power of lifelong friendship\, thorns and all. \nFollowing the play\, everyone is invited back to the home of Dick and Kathy Klein (65 Watercress Place) for a potluck dinner and discussion. \nCATF 2026

SUMMARY:A Place to Dream: Building Beds for Eastern Panhandle Children
DESCRIPTION:For the past year\, Carter Dubois has proudly represented the Eastern Panhandle Chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace\, helping provide beds and bedding to children in need throughout the community. \nThrough his service\, Carter has gained a deep appreciation for the difference a bed can make in a child’s life. A safe\, comfortable place to sleep supports a child’s physical\, emotional and mental well-being. It can lead to better sleep\, healthier development\, improved learning and greater confidence. Yet many children in our area still do not have beds of their own. \nOne of the most meaningful aspects of Carter’s involvement has been sharing the experience with his three children. By meeting local families and helping deliver beds\, they have learned valuable lessons about gratitude\, compassion\, perspective and community service. Carter believes these firsthand experiences have given his children a lasting understanding of the importance of recognizing the needs of others and giving back. \nSleep in Heavenly Peace is a national nonprofit powered by passionate volunteers who share a simple mission: “No Kid Sleeps on the Floor in Our Town!” Local chapters bring volunteers and community partners together to build and deliver beds to children who need them. \nThe organization’s Build Days offer community members an engaging\, hands-on way to help. Guided by chapter team members\, volunteers work in an assembly-line setting at stations dedicated to sawing\, sanding\, drilling\, assembling\, staining and branding the wood. In just a few hours\, a pile of raw lumber is transformed into finished beds ready for delivery to local children. \nThere is a role for everyone\, regardless of experience. By volunteering for a Build Day\, supporting the chapter or helping spread the word\, community members can make a direct and lasting difference in the lives of children and families across the Eastern Panhandle. \nSleep in Heavenly Peace is not only building beds—it is building partnerships\, strengthening communities and giving children a safer\, healthier place to dream.

SUMMARY:Friends of Music Presents its 2026-27 Season
DESCRIPTION:Now celebrating its 26th year\, Friends of Music promotes musical excellence and performance of chamber music in West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle. We pursue this mission by sponsoring the all-professional Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra and smaller ensembles in a 5-concert season\, and by boosting music education in public schools through the provision of mini-grants\, scholarships\, and a college-level internship. Our vision is a community where the lives of adults and children are enriched through music\, which provides a common language for building connections and kinship. Heidi Johnston\, the new president of the organization will be sharing features of the upcoming season. \nHeidi brings a variety of talents to the Board as an independent business owner\, freelance writer\, and experienced volunteer. She has worked in real estate sales since 2014\, honing her skills in customer service\, marketing\, negotiation\, and problem solving. In the preceding decade\, she wrote grant applications\, newsletters\, and feature stories for local nonprofits\, municipal offices\, and print media. As a grant writer\, she secured more than $2 million for clients in arts & culture\, social services\, and animal welfare. Living in Ipswich\, Massachusetts until 2019\, she served for 9 years on the Town’s Planning Board\, where she chaired monthly meetings\, oversaw public hearings\, enacted local zoning bylaws\, and recommended policy changes. Heidi earned an MBA from the University of Massachusetts and a BS from Bates College in Maine. She holds fond memories of her childhood music lessons\, marching band rehearsals\, and orchestra performances.
