SUMMARY:Bullets\, Buckles\, and Bells and Other Civil War Relics
DESCRIPTION:John Chapman\, son of long-time Shepherdstown Rotary member R. Dabney Chapman (1929-2015)\, was born in Garmisch-Partinkirchen\, West Germany\, in 1965\, and grew up a “State Department brat\,” moving from country to country thanks to his father’s career. Migrating to Shepherdstown in 1983 to attend Shepherd College\, he became enamored of the area’s beauty\, history\, and people\, and like so many others has remained in the region ever since\, ultimately convincing his parents to retire here in 1986. \nA longtime teacher of middle school Social Studies\, he inherited his father’s love for history\, particularly as it pertains to the Shenandoah Valley and the Civil War. As a result\, his primary avocation and passion for the last 35 years has been searching the farms and fields of the lower Shenandoah Valley\, particularly around Shepherdstown\, with his shovel and metal detector- occasionally succeeding in discovering and documenting long-forgotten homesites or Civil War camps. Articles and pictures of the results have been published in North South Trader’s Civil War and American Digger magazines. \nJohn and his wife Crystal\, a case manager nurse at Berkeley Medical Center\, reside just outside metropolitan Cherry Run in Morgan County\, along with their dog\, cat\, and three-legged rescue squirrel Miss Twiggy.

SUMMARY:World Affairs Seminar 2025: Understanding & Embracing Immigration Through Community Dialogue & Action
DESCRIPTION:Over the past 37 years\, the Rotary Clubs of Shepherdstown and Martinsburg have organized an annual World Affairs Seminar that addresses a relevant global and national issue\, with the participation of leaders from the local high schools in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. This year we have added support from the Rotary Clubs of Charles Town and Berkeley Springs \nImmigration remains one of the most pressing and complex global issues\, influencing societies at every level—from national policies to local communities to international relations. As political “climates” shift\, migration patterns evolve\, and tensions intensify\, there is an urgent need for promoting well-informed\, compassionate\, and strategically balanced responses to immigration at the national and local levels. \nThe 2025 World Affairs Seminar addresses this urgency by providing participating students with a balanced understanding of immigration’s multifaceted nature\, including the various issues and opportunities arising in the Eastern Panhandle.

SUMMARY:Potomac River Clean Up
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our fourth annual Potomac River Cleanup and Float planned by our new Environmental Service Committee. Below is a web link to a signup sheet. \nThe starting point on the morning of Sept. 20 is the meadow at Steamboat Run\, in proximity to the Vreugdenhil residence. We then float the Potomac and remove as much debris as we can; there will unfortunately be plenty. \nOur end point is the Shepherdstown Boat Ramp\, just below the James Rumsey Bridge. The trip will take about 3 hours. Canoes and kayaks are needed\, along with pickups to haul them. \n(Check out the short video from our float in 2023.) \n \nAt 2 p.m. there will be a barbecue picnic at the Vreugdenhil residence for those who can attend. \nMore information to follow. \nQuestions may go to Daan Vreugdenhil at daanv@birdlist.org or call Daan at 304-581-7740. \nConsider joining in for a few hours on the morning of September 20! \nPotomac River Cleanup Project – Google Sheets
