SUMMARY:Fun with Music Trivia from the 60's and 70's
DESCRIPTION:Anyone who set foot in Brian Palank’s office knows that “musak” played constantly\, partly to drown out the whine of the dental drill but also the always loquacious doctor\, nurses\, and gauze-garbled patients. You always left with a new ear worm—a song you hadn’t heard since high school. Through it all\, the good doctor absorbed a textbook knowledge of the piped-in hits of the ’60s and ’70s\, among other genres. So this morning we will enjoy an interesting “spin” on 44 years of dental practice. \nBrian’s brief bio in his own words: \n“I was raised in the suburbs of Washington DC.\, first in PG County and then in the Rockville-Potomac areas of Montgomery County. I attended high school in DC at St John’s College high school\, followed by college in Worcester\, Mass\, where I majored in biology and was the team mascot (Crusader ) for the football team. Following graduation in 1975\, I started dental school in Baltimore at the University of Maryland. There\, I met my wife\, Chris\, who was a nursing student at the time. We moved to Martinsburg in 1979 for me to participate in a 1-year postgraduate training program learning advanced procedures. Following my year at the VA\, I opened my dental practice in 1980 in Shepherdstown. I retired this past spring after 44 years. Chris and I have been married 46 years and have two children and two grandsons.”

SUMMARY:Alma Cedillo: My Exchange Year\, Belgium 2023-2024
DESCRIPTION:My talk is titled “My Exchange Year\, Belgium 2023-2024”. After my senior year\, I was given the opportunity to participate in this program to further promote Rotary core values abroad and also learn to use them in my personal/future professional life. ln this talk\, I plan to relate the personal experiences I had as a Rotary Youth exchange student during this past year. These personal experiences include how I adapted to a new language\, living with “strangers”\, being in a new culture\, and more along these topics. I will be sharing the challenges that I faced along with all the positive experiences as well. The goal of my presentation is to give fellow Rotarians an inside view of what it is like to do an exchange in recent time and also show what the exchange program itself has to offer a young person.

While I am abroad\, I hope to learn many things about the Danish culture\, language\, and hopefully figure out what I would like to major in for college the following year. I hope you enjoy my presentation “My Journey to Rotary Youth Exchange” showing pictures of my hobbies\, family\, and upcoming trip. \nMy Journey To Rotary Youth Exchange

SUMMARY:Shepherdstown WV's Fourth of July Parade and Picnic
DESCRIPTION:Shepherdstown WV’s annual Fourth of July parade and community picnic is back for 2024! \nAs always\, the parade and picnic will be held on the Fourth itself\, which is Thursday this year. Both events will be held rain or shine. Everyone is welcome at both\, and admission to both is free. \nThe parade and picnic have been organized since 2007 by the Rotary Club of Shepherdstown. The goal is to provide wholesome\, family-oriented Fourth of July events that everyone can enjoy. If you’re looking for an old-fashioned\, small-town Fourth of July celebration\, this is it! \nThe parade will be held starting at 11:00 a.m. on German Street downtown. It will last about an hour. Any area institution\, organization\, business or individual in good standing is welcome to join in the parade. Floats are encouraged. Antique vehicles are always welcome. There is no fee to participate\, but participants must register beforehand. Following is a link that will take you to an online parade information sheet and registration form: https://app.emailmeform.com/builder/form/SN06cY8dr1V0Ac \nOnce you complete the form\, simply hit “send email” and we’ll receive your registration. Or you can contact Rotary Club member Peter Smith at 304-876-1139 or shepherdstownparades@gmail.com. \nThe picnic will be held right after the parade\, from 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m.\, in the pavilion at Morgan’s Gove Park on Kearneysville Pike (Route 480) just southwest of town. It will feature live music by the Speakeasy Boys and the Gypsy Ramblers. There will also be lots of free children’s activities\, including a waterslide\, scavenger hunt\, a water balloon toss\, face painting\, and more. \nThe Rotary Club of Shepherdstown will be selling hamburgers\, hot dogs\, chips\, and non-alcoholic beverages at reasonable prices. All proceeds from those sales are used to help cover event costs. \nAmy & Alex’s Homemade Ice Cream & Coffee will be there too\, selling their excellent ice cream. People can bring their own picnic lunches if they prefer. \nPlenty of parade parking spaces will be available in the Shepherd University parking lots adjacent to downtown. There is also plenty of room for parking at Morgan’s Grove Park.
