SUMMARY:Kakamega\, Kenya & 29:11 with Terry Walker
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn more about 29:11\, Inc. and their mission to help one street-child at a time through their HOPE program.  Terry Walker and Jennifer Satterlee will share their experience from the November 2024 trip to Kakamega\, Kenya and the amazing impact this non-profit organization has on these often forgotten children. \nWe dream of a world where no child has to sleep on the street hungry and alone. A world where no child has to sniff glue to make their hunger pains go away. A world where no child is invisible to their community or separated from their family. \nThe Board of Directors is made up of some of the most passionate people you will ever meet. What started out as one adventure turned into a lifetime of commitment to a bigger calling. “We want to help street-connected children change their story and change it in the way they want to change it. We want to show them the dignity and respect they deserve in controlling their future as human beings.”

SUMMARY:Hospice and Palliative Care 101: What to Expect and When to Refer
DESCRIPTION:A relative newcomer to supportive care\, Jim Klein joined Hospice of the Panhandle in January 2024. He efforts have made an immediate impact in developing community partnerships and the expansion of service. His zeal and effectiveness manifested recognition by the NHPCO (National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization) where he was invited to speak at the national conference in Denver\, Colorado in September and hopes to share similar information in his Rotary presentation. The focus of the information Jim will share includes a wide variety of supportive care as well as a brief overview of recent community partnerships (Panhandle Palliative Services\, our free grief services\, in-patient facility and volunteering with Hospice of the Panhandle). SUMMARY:Classification talk with Jamie Miller
DESCRIPTION:Originally from Martinsburg\, my husband and I moved to Shepherdstown in 2017. We fell in love with a piece of property while we were out and about in Shepherdstown and decided this was where we wanted to grow our family. I have worked in recruitment for eight years; first in university admissions recruitment and now for WVU Medicine Human Resources. I recruit for several nursing services departments and other healthcare professional positions at Berkeley and Jefferson Medical Centers. I am a remote employee and love opportunities where I’m able to engage with the community. I was involved in fundraising several years ago and also had the opportunity to partner with Rotary to establish the Blue Ridge CTC Rotaract Club in 2015 when I was a faculty member. I’m grateful for the opportunity to get involved with Shepherdstown Rotary!

SUMMARY:Dabney Chapman: Man\, Myth\, and Dad & Other Civil War Relics
DESCRIPTION:John Chapman\, son of long-time Shepherdstown Rotary member R. Dabney Chapman (1929-2015)\, was born in Garmisch-Partinkirchen\, West Germany\, in 1965\, and grew up a “State Department brat\,” moving from country to country thanks to his father’s career. Migrating to Shepherdstown in 1983 to attend Shepherd College\, he became enamored of the area’s beauty\, history\, and people\, and like so many others has remained in the region ever since\, ultimately convincing his parents to retire here in 1986. \nA longtime teacher of middle school Social Studies\, he inherited his father’s love for history\, particularly as it pertains to the Shenandoah Valley and the Civil War. As a result\, his primary avocation and passion for the last 35 years has been searching the farms and fields of the lower Shenandoah Valley\, particularly around Shepherdstown\, with his shovel and metal detector- occasionally succeeding in discovering and documenting long-forgotten homesites or Civil War camps. Articles and pictures of the results have been published in North South Trader’s Civil War and American Digger magazines. \nJohn and his wife Crystal\, a case manager nurse at Berkeley Medical Center\, reside just outside metropolitan Cherry Run in Morgan County\, along with their dog\, cat\, and three-legged rescue squirrel Miss Twiggy.

SUMMARY:Fun with Music Trivia from the 60's and 70's
DESCRIPTION:Anyone who set foot in Brian Palank’s office knows that “musak” played constantly\, partly to drown out the whine of the dental drill but also the always loquacious doctor\, nurses\, and gauze-garbled patients. You always left with a new ear worm—a song you hadn’t heard since high school. Through it all\, the good doctor absorbed a textbook knowledge of the piped-in hits of the ’60s and ’70s\, among other genres. So this morning we will enjoy an interesting “spin” on 44 years of dental practice. \nBrian’s brief bio in his own words: \n“I was raised in the suburbs of Washington DC.\, first in PG County and then in the Rockville-Potomac areas of Montgomery County. I attended high school in DC at St John’s College high school\, followed by college in Worcester\, Mass\, where I majored in biology and was the team mascot (Crusader ) for the football team. Following graduation in 1975\, I started dental school in Baltimore at the University of Maryland. There\, I met my wife\, Chris\, who was a nursing student at the time. We moved to Martinsburg in 1979 for me to participate in a 1-year postgraduate training program learning advanced procedures. Following my year at the VA\, I opened my dental practice in 1980 in Shepherdstown. I retired this past spring after 44 years. Chris and I have been married 46 years and have two children and two grandsons.”

SUMMARY:Alma Cedillo: My Exchange Year\, Belgium 2023-2024
DESCRIPTION:My talk is titled “My Exchange Year\, Belgium 2023-2024”. After my senior year\, I was given the opportunity to participate in this program to further promote Rotary core values abroad and also learn to use them in my personal/future professional life. ln this talk\, I plan to relate the personal experiences I had as a Rotary Youth exchange student during this past year. These personal experiences include how I adapted to a new language\, living with “strangers”\, being in a new culture\, and more along these topics. I will be sharing the challenges that I faced along with all the positive experiences as well. The goal of my presentation is to give fellow Rotarians an inside view of what it is like to do an exchange in recent time and also show what the exchange program itself has to offer a young person.
