DESCRIPTION:A bed is a basic need for the proper physical\, emotional and mental support that a child needs and many children in our area do not have beds to sleep in.  Having a good bed helps children grow\, helps them sleep better\, helps them learn.  Come and hear about this innovative team\, building beds\, building partners. Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a national organization answering the call to a national problem and is where it is today because of the passionate volunteers who believe in the mission of getting kids off the floor and into beds. In just a few hours of your time\, you can make a direct\, permanent impact in the quality of life for dozens\, if not hundreds and maybe even thousands of kids in your community. \nBuilding Beds for Kids in Need\nParticipating in one of their Build Days is an exciting experience. There’s always something to do… from the moment you arrive\, sign in\, and get your safety gear until the last SHP logo is branded on the final headboard of the day. Volunteers – under the guidance of SHP Chapter team members – build bunks in an assembly line setup. There are stations for sawing\, sanding\, drilling\, assembling\, staining\, and branding the wood. What started as a pile of raw lumber from the hardware store becomes ready-to-deliver bunks for kids in need.

SUMMARY:Victoria Ames & Medlife
DESCRIPTION:Victoria Ames\, a senior in the Shepherd University Nursing program will share details about the upcoming Medlife trip for students.  Medlife contacts the village and finds out what the needs are.  Then the students go to the village for a week and help.  They have built sturdy steps to help overcome flood waters.  They have built new buildings\, installed roofs and more.  Plus they have provided dental and nursing care.   The students that have participated described it as “eye opening” and “meaningful.”

DESCRIPTION:Mark Peiffer is a young nonprofit professional who is motivated to help farmers and families in need and contribute to the betterment of his community.\n\nHe moved to West Virginia over twelve years ago\, fell in love with the people and mountains\, and has called it home ever since. He brings a variety of nonprofit experience to his role as Operations Manager as well as the curiosity needed to dig into problems and find solutions through resourcefulness and collaboration. He believes that each community has the ability to feed itself and build its own wealth but must make a choice to invest in local businesses and farms. Mark envisions communities throughout West Virginia that grow enough food to feed each family\, especially food insecure families\, and have excess food to export to nearby communities.\n\nMark received his Associates Degree in Business Administration from Blue Ridge Community and Technical College in Martinsburg\, WV and holds a lifetime Registered Product Owner certification through Scrum Inc. Mark lives in Jefferson County\, West Virginia with his wife and two children.

SUMMARY:Kate Colbert\, Rotary Youth Exchange in Denmark
DESCRIPTION:Kate Colbert has returned home from her Rotary Youth exchange year in Denmark. Born and raised in Shepherdstown\, Kate has attended both Shepherdstown Elementary and Middle Schools\, as well as recently graduating from Jefferson High School. During her time at Jefferson\, she was an avid member of the swim and lacrosse teams while also having the leadership position as an officer for the school’s Interact club. \nLast year\, Kate joined the Rotary Youth exchange program and spent her senior year in Denmark. During her year abroad\, she learned a lot about the Danish language\, culture\, and unique society that the country has to offer. Next year\, Kate plans to attend Cape Fear Community College in North Carolina\, where she will be working towards attaining her Associate of the Arts degree. In the future\, she wants to start a career in urban planning and design\, and help improve the communities of the future.

DESCRIPTION:As a change of pace from the formality of official business\, we have Jimmy Hayes coming to share his comedy routine.  Jimmy has recently retired from the Army and lives in his weekend home here in Shepherdstown.  He has travelled a lot.  He met a lot of interesting people.  His comedy routine provides some fun tales of his experiences.  Jimmy has performed at CSO clubs internationally\, in comedy clubs in Washington DC\, locally and he has a gig lined up for a Las Vegas club in the Fall. DESCRIPTION:Retired CEO\, Professional Philanthropist\, and Accidental Daredevil (Mostly on Purpose)\nDawn Linn isn’t your average retiree. After steering the YWCA Northcentral PA as CEO from 2017 to January 2025\, she hung up her executive hat\, but definitely not her sense of adventure. Before leading the YWCA\, she spent 14 years as the VP of Planned Philanthropy at the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania\, where she practically wrote the book on cultivating generosity. And yes\, she did that after a 15-year award-winning banking career that started at Peoples State Bank and peaked at Wachovia Wealth Management. \nBut here’s the thing: Dawn isn’t just about spreadsheets and strategic plans. She’s a secret (or not-so-secret anymore) thrill-seeker! Forget quiet evenings; Dawn’s been known to rappel down buildings (yes\, the tallest one in Williamsport\, thank you very much)\, zip-line through forests\, conquer white-water rapids\, and even explore canyons. Think Indiana Jones\, but with a better understanding of charitable giving. \nWhen she’s not chasing adrenaline\, Dawn enjoys more grounded pursuits. You’ll find her creating stunning silk flower arrangements\, tending her vibrant garden\, or getting lost in a good light fiction novel—because even superheroes need downtime. \nHer community involvement is legendary. A Past President of the Williamsport Rotary Club\, she also served as Secretary and Foundation Chair for the club and was an Area 4 Governor. She’s the founder of the Northcentral PA Estate Planners Council and a dedicated advocate for her community\, Dawn has a heart as big as her travel itinerary. Her passion projects through Rotary include the Junior Rotarian program (a proud annual project since 1936)\, Highway Cleanup\, the Brandon Park Garden\, 3rd Grade Dictionaries\, and the Indoor Mini Golf initiative. Our guest speaker is Mark O’Hern\, appointed president and CEO of WVU Hospitals East in November 2024.  WVU Hospitals East includes Berkeley Medical Center\, Jefferson Medical Center\, and their affiliated medical clinics here in the East Region. \nPrior to joining WVU Medicine\, Mark served as Market President for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) providing executive and strategic leadership to two community hospitals – UPMC East and UPMC McKeesport – several comprehensive ambulatory and surgery centers\, and over 100 primary and specialty care practice locations. \nA native of upstate New York\, Mark has a Bachelor of Science and Master of Health Administration from Cornell University and has served on the boards of several community-based organizations including the March of Dimes and the YMCA.

DESCRIPTION:For over three decades\, the Contemporary American Theater Festival has been producing and developing new American theater. Throughout its rich history\, CATF has contributed significantly to the American theater landscape. This year\, CATF is recommitting itself to its mission and telling stories with purpose – stories that provoke\, stories that ignite\, and stories that inspire action. This morning we will get a sneak preview of the season from Amy Wratchford\, CATF’s Interim Managing Director. \n\nAmy’s personal mission is to help create a more joyful\, wholehearted\, courageous world through the power of her example. In 2021\, Amy founded The Wratchford Group\, an arts management consulting company with the vision to transform nonprofit arts organizations\, creating a stable\, thriving\, empowering\, and equitable industry. Amy specializes in interim executive leadership\, financial stabilization plans\, Board governance\, organizational analysis\, and executive coaching. \nShe spent over ten years as Managing Director of the American Shakespeare Center. As the company’s chief administrative and financial officer\, Amy oversaw finance\, marketing\, development\, and other business management functions for ASC. Before joining ASC\, Amy served as Managing Director of Synchronicity Theatre in Atlanta. Previously\, spent 13 years in New York City as a producer\, director\, and actor. Amy regularly serves on grant panels\, including the National Endowment for the Arts and Virginia Commission for the Arts\, as well as adjudicating panels\, including EdTA China’s 2019 National Young Thespian Festival in Shanghai\, as well as state\, regional\, and national community theater festivals. \nAmy holds a bachelor of fine arts degree in Acting from the Tisch School of the Arts of New York University and a master of fine arts degree in Performing Arts Management from Brooklyn College.
