SUMMARY:Sowing Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:Chris Gorman’s lifelong dedication to agriculture began in childhood\, working alongside his father and grandfather at Harmony Hill Farm. His curiosity and commitment to learning every aspect of farm operations led him to take on increasing responsibility\, including decision-making roles focused on expanding production and implementing best management practices. Chris is especially committed to environmental stewardship\, ensuring the farm’s operations are sustainable and beneficial to the land. Heather Gorman joined the agricultural community when she married Chris in 2011. \nDespite not having a farming background\, Heather quickly immersed herself in all aspects of Harmony Hill Farm’s operations. She learned to raise beef cattle\, manage hay and crop production\, and actively participate in conservation initiatives. Heather brought new ideas to the farm\, including beehives and goat milk soap\, diversifying offerings and supporting sustainability. Harmony Hill Farm LLC operates as a for-profit enterprise\, maintaining Black Angus cattle\, laying hens\, dairy goats\, and beehives. The farm is committed to innovation and collaboration\, hosting a doctoral student from West Virginia University to study native grasses and carbon capture. Responding to climate change\, Chris and Heather experimented with annual grasses to maintain livestock health during drought and shared their research with local producers and universities. \nCommunity service is central to the Gorman’s’ philosophy. They are active members of the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce and Farm Bureau. Heather is deeply involved in youth development through 4H and Girl Scouts. Their dedication to sustainable agriculture\, innovation\, and community involvement exemplifies their commitment to both the land and the people of Jefferson County.
