Dictionaries and Thesauruses for Local School Children
Promoting literacy has always been a major Rotary priority.
To help fulfill this priority locally, the Shepherdstown and Charles Town Rotary Clubs team up to give free dictionaries and thesauruses to the County;s school children at the beginning of the school year each fall.
The dictionaries are given to all of the County's third graders, and the thesauruses to all of the fifth graders. Educators recommend the introduction of these resources at these grade levels.
The dictionaries and thesauruses that are distributed are high-quality paperbacks that children can and do use at school and home for many years.
The Clubs purchase the books at cost from The Dictionary Project, a national non-profit organizationthat supports these kinds of distributions. The County Board of Education helps the Clubs work out distribution schedules among the county's various schools, and volunteers from the two Clubs hand the books out to the children.
Volunteers from the Shepherdstown Club hand the books out at the elementary schools in the northern half of the county, and volunteers from the Charles Town Club hand them out at the schools in the southern half.
The Shepherdstown Club's Vocational Service Committee coordinates this project.
