Rotary International is a hierarchical organization of over 1.214 million members governed by a Board of 34 Directors. Each Director represents a Rotary ZONE, which is the major international governance unit. The major programs of Rotary International are Global Networking Groups, Rotaract, Interact, Rotary Community Corps, Rotary Youth Exchange, and the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. Rotary International comprises over 34,000 local Rotary clubs.
The Rotary Foundation is a not-for-profit fund raising organization independent of Rotary International but with responsibilities for supporting initiatives compatible with Rotary programs. Its major programs are Polio Plus, literacy classes, clean water initiatives, and medical care. Polio Plus is the Foundation’s response to $355 million in challenge grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to help wipe out polio. The Foundation also provides Ambassadorial Scholarships, Rotary Peace Fellowships, and supports Group Study Exchange.
Shepherdstown Rotary Club is a component of Zone 29, which encompasses 61 clubs in Canada, and all clubs in Michigan, Maryland, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. In 2007, Zone 29 encompassed 17 Rotary districts, 844 Rotary Clubs, and 34,638 members.
Shepherdstown Rotary Club is a component of District 7360, which is made up of 77 Rotary Clubs and serves about 2800 Rotarians located in three states in the Northeastern United States of America. The Northern part of the District covers the central portion of the State of Pennsylvania while the Southern part of the District includes clubs in Maryland and West Virginia. Each District is led by a District Governor, Assistant Governor, with several District Committees responsible for programmatic leadership and guidance to individual clubs.
Districts are responsible for connecting local clubs to the vast resources of Rotary International, providing training for incoming Presidents of local clubs, and facilitating programs such as Rotary Youth Exchange and Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. Districts hold annual conferences to showcase the programs of district clubs and programs, and to report to the district membership.
Club 24552, District 7350, is the Rotary Club of Shepherdstown, established in 1987. It celebrated 25 years of “Service Above Self” in June, 2012.
