It is hailed as revolutionary. It has changed how many of us communicate, work, relate to one another, and learn about our world. It has shifted our relationships. Posed new threats and opportunities to businesses. It is adored, feared, and perhaps misunderstood. It is about people; whether it connects or divides us. It has become an important part of our culture“.

Matthew J. Kushin, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the Department of Communication at Shepherd University. Prior to joining Shepherd in the fall of 2012, he was on faculty for two years at Utah Valley University. He earned his Ph.D. in Communication from the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University.

Dr. Kushin is an award-winning educator who teaches courses in social media, public relations, theory, and research. His research expertise is in the area of social media, politics, and civic life. His work has been published or is in press in well-known academic journals including the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, the International Journal of Public Opinion Research, and Mass Communication & Society.

He lives in Harpers Ferry with his wife Kelin Kushin. Kelin is the Associate Executive Director of the Optometric Extension Program Foundation, an international not for profit dedicated to the advancement of the discipline of optometry.
